Our objective is to promote the self deployment, use and management of water wells in remote areas of Africa and to share our knowledge of water management with the local population. We hope to increase the accessibility to fresh drinking water in the remoter areas of Africa and encourage the local population to seek out new stores of water and hand them the tools an knowledge to do so.
Where will we go? Having consulted with various experts and local charity organizations in Africa who have considerable experience with local regulations, security needs, demographics and of course can point us to the worst affected areas we have selected several locations based on their advice. How we will build these wells we will tell later on. We have opted for Africa because the need for drinking water is highest. At the end of the project which is estimated to take about 1 year, we will donate the SUV’s and all other equipment to the Nelson Mandela Foundation or an equivalent organization. How do we work?
There are many different ways to drill water wells. The method we have chosen is called the ´Percussion ´method. This method of drilling dates back from the Chinese era, around 1100 years before Christ. The percussion drill derives its name from the drilling process by which a drill pipe is raised by an installation and then dropped to the ground resulting in the soil, even when it is rocky, split. In this way depths of up to 600 meters are reached.
In Africa we expect an average water depth of 20 to 35 meters. Research has shown that the ´Percussion ´method has long been used and is suitable for different types of soil and rocks. This method has already been successfully applied by an American organization in Africa. The process has been modified and modernized on the advice of various specialists (including geologists) so that less manpower and less time is required to be invested. Instead of simple manpower, we will use a concrete-mixer as the drive motor for the ´Percussion ´method. They are available anywhere in the world and have a reputation to be indestructible. Of course, there are already several water wells built by the United Nations. They have started with the larger cities to provide water. In the past, they used big trucks with all kinds of equipment on it. Experience has shown that they are seldom effective, could not meet all the demand and remote areas could not be reached. The method we are going to use is suitable for small and remote villages. The work we are going to do is in cooperation with the local population so that they also learn the knowledge to do it independently.
